Who I Am

Hi, I'm Alex — a software engineer and career development enthusiast based in the U.S. After spending over a decade in the tech industry, I've been through multiple job changes, pivoted between roles, and watched countless colleagues struggle with the same question: "Should I stay or should I go?"

I built CareerCompass because I believe career decisions should be based on more than gut feeling. During my own job searches, I found that most online resources fell into two camps: generic advice blogs that lacked personalization, or personality tests that had little connection to real-world outcomes. There was nothing that simply asked about your situation and gave you a clear, data-informed answer.

Why I Built This Site

Back in 2024, a close friend was agonizing over whether to leave his job. He had been underpaid for two years, hadn't learned anything new in months, and was working 60-hour weeks. But he was afraid of making the wrong call. Every career test he took told him about his "personality type" — none told him: "Yes, it's time to leave, and here's why."

That conversation planted the seed. I realized that most career assessment tools are designed to sell you something (a report, a coaching session, a certification). I wanted to build something that simply delivered honest, practical guidance — no upsells, no data mining, no fluff.

CareerCompass is that tool. It's built for anyone who has ever stared at their inbox wondering whether to respond to a recruiter's message, questioned whether their skills are still relevant, or felt exhausted but couldn't tell if it was burnout or just a bad week.

What I Plan to Keep Offering

CareerCompass is not a one-and-done project. Here's what you can expect going forward:

  • Always-free tools — The three core tools (Job Change Timer, Skill-Market Match, Burnout Health Score) will remain free forever. No premium tiers, no usage limits.
  • Fresh content every week — The blog publishes new articles weekly covering career strategy, salary negotiation, skill development, and work-life balance — all backed by research and real-world experience.
  • Quarterly data updates — The skill-market data is reviewed and refreshed every quarter to reflect the latest market trends and salary benchmarks.
  • New tools over time — I'm actively developing additional tools including a relocation cost calculator, a remote vs. office decision matrix, and a skills gap analyzer.
  • No ads (for now) — The site is self-funded. If that changes in the future, I'll prioritize non-intrusive sponsorships over banner ads, and always disclose them transparently.

If you have ideas for new tools or topics you'd like covered, I'd love to hear from you. Drop me a line at uhdnnnk998@163.com.
